Creative Vision

MORE THAN AN ARTIST

J Lū is a creator of thought, form, and cultural narratives, whose work centers on the complexities of identity formation for young Black males and the emotional depth of human experience. Approaching his artistic practice as a general contractor would build a development, J Lū constructs each painting by meticulously layering an assortment of mediums. This process reveals both the physical and emotional layers that define personal and collective identity.

In J Lū’s work, emotions and historical narratives are in constant flux, blending to reflect both individual and shared experiences. The interplay of color and form, built through these layers, conveys the nuanced journey of navigating Black identity post-Jim Crow, capturing moments of struggle, resilience, and hope. These works invite the viewer to explore the intersections of culture, history, and self, while simultaneously presenting a commentary on the societal contributions of people of color and the challenges that remain. Through this layered and textured approach, J Lū creates a dialogue that speaks to the emotional landscapes of Black adolescence, exploring both the individual search for self-knowledge and the broader pursuit of equity.
